The ancient city of Adramyteion which was an Athenian colony, was situated on the western coast of the district. Mysians were the first ones who settled in Burhaniye area. The city center was up at the hill called Karataş Tepesi today but later moved to the inside of the coast. The city was on the trad road between Troy and Pergamon and once the Pergamons accepted Romans sovereignty, the area started to be ruled by the Romans, followed by the Byzantines until the Seljuks.
